Once Sicily had been captured by the Allies, Mussolini was arrested by King Victor Emmanuel lll, however the Germans were able to release Mussolini and place him as head of a German state while the Germans continued on colonizing Italy. Although the Germans had set up a defensive line in Southern Rome, the Allies were able to take back Rome on June 4, 1944 while carrying several casualties. On June 6,1944, also known as D-Day, the Allied forces invaded Normandy’s beaches with massive naval weapons. Within three months of constantly fighting the Germans, the allies were able to break the Germans defense line and march inland. By the end of August 1944, the Allies had fully taken back Paris and on December the Battle of the Bulge broke out between the Allies and the Germans in Belgium. As an outcome of this battle, both sides had an extreme number of casualties, however the Allies were still stronger than the Germans.On March 1945, the Allies had crossed the Rhine River and were slowly approaching Germany. The Allies had met up with the Soviets on April 1945 as they moved toward the Elbe River. The Soviets had been advancing westward where they would invade Ukraine by 1943, and march into the Baltic states and Berlin. As the Allies approached Nazi Europe, they were able to see the concentration camps that the Nazi’s had created to punish the Jews as Hitler constantly repeated that they were the cause of Germany losing World War 1. On April 30, Hitler committed suicide and on May 2 Mussolini had been shot by Italian partisans. On May 7 1945, Germany finally stated its defeat and World War 2 was over.

In 1943, U.S forces began to reach the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa where the Japanese placed their main priorities for air war. The U.S. having captured these two Japanese islands felt a peak of hope for entering mainland. After President Roosevelt died, president Truman had been working on the Manhattan project where the creation of the atomic bomb took place.Truman decided to use the bomb created to bomb Japan in the city of Hiroshima on August 6, and unfortunately 1900,000 civilians died from exposure to severe radiation caused by the bomb. On August 9, a second bomb struck Nagasaki creating absolute and utter devastation to all, Emperor Hirohito announced his loss on August 14, 1945.
