battle of iwo jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted from February 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945 between the US and Japan. It took place on the island of Iwo Jima, and this battle was the first battle to be fought on Japanese soil. The US first started by bombing the island and then about 30,000 US marines landed on the island. They were surprised to find Japanese soldiers when they landed, because they expected the bombs to kill the Japanese on the island. However, at the time of the bombings the Japanese hid in tunnels to avoid the bombs. Once, the US soldiers were on the island, the Japanese came out of their hiding spots. After 36 days, the US was able to win this battle, and they placed an american flag on the Suribachi mountain.
