franklin d. rooseveltFranklin Delano Roosevelt was born on 30 January 1882 in New York State. He attended Harvard and Columbia Law school, but didn’t want to work in the political field. In 1905, he married his cousin Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1910, he was elected to the New York Senate, and was soon recognized as a Democrat. From 1913 to 1920 he was assistant secretary of the navy. In 1921, Roosevelt caught polio, and seemed to be the end of his career. However, he didn’t give up and was able to continue working. In 1928, Roosevelt became governor of New York and in 1932 he was nominated for president, and won. Roosevelt created the New Deal which helped America out of the Great Depression. This gained him the American people’s favor and as a result he was the only president to be elected for four terms. During the first years of world war two he kept America out of the war and funded Britain. However, after pearl Harbour, Roosevelt prioritized joining the allies to fight against the axis powers. He also created the basis of the United Nations, and many plans for post-war years. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, less than a month before Germany surrendered. (BBC History, 2015)
