battle of BRITAIN
The Battle of Britain began on July 10th, 1940, and lasted for months. It was probably the most important battle in all of world war two. By this time Germany had control over most of Europe, and Britain was the only major country that wasn’t conquered. Germany decided to invade Britain and came up with Operation Sea Lion. To take over Britain, Germany came up with a tactic to destroy the British Air Force with bombs then conquer the country. Germany attacked both towns and military bases on the southern coast first. Then Germany focused on defeating the Air force. Germany kept dropping bombs and Britain fought back. Hitler was frustrated with how long it was taking to invade Britain, so he decided to bomb major cities including London. The bombing of the city of London lasted for 57 nights and was called the blitz. About 1,000 British and 1,800 German planes were destroyed in this battle. After many months (May of 1941) Britain was able to win the battle.
